Dr. Mateusz Aleksander Bonca
I am a business leader and researcher with a career-long drive to explore emerging, uncharted topics - from Islamic finance to blockchain governance - combined with over two decades of international executive and consulting experience across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.
Current Role Since 2020, I lead Jones Lang LaSalle in Poland, managing the company's local advisory business and overseeing the EMEA Centre of Excellence.
Academia
My academic work reflects a consistent pattern: identifying novel, frontier topics before they enter mainstream discourse.
Almost two decades ago, I authored "Islamskie instrumenty finansowe" (Islamic Financial Instruments) - the first systematic and in-depth economic analysis of key Islamic financial instruments in Polish literature, covering the religious-philosophical foundations of Islamic economics and their practical applications in business with the Muslim world.
Today, my research focuses on blockchain governance, trust, and the tokenisation of the economy. My recent paper examines how decentralised public blockchain networks shift the foundations of trust in transactions, identifying technological, economic, political, legal, and socio-psychological factors that shape trust in blockchain-based systems. I have also co-authored research on regulatory sandboxes, exploring how legal and institutional frameworks can keep pace with technological innovation in the blockchain and fintech space.
This body of work bridges management, economics, and technology - bringing a practitioner's lens to questions that are reshaping how we think about governance, intermediation, and value exchange.
Business
Prior to JLL, I served as President (and earlier Vice President) of the Management Board of Grupa LOTOS S.A. (2016-2019). Between 2012 and 2016, I worked as a Director at Deutsche Bank AG in Frankfurt. Earlier, I led consulting teams at Peppers and Rogers Group in the Middle East (2010-2012), and from 2004 to 2010, I worked at McKinsey & Company delivering projects across various industries in over a dozen countries on four continents.
Education
I hold a PhD in Economics and studied at the Warsaw School of Economics (SGH) and Al Akhawayn University in Morocco.
